Jean-Jacques Rampal

From 1977 to 1980, Jean-Jacques Rampal learned under Jean-Jacques Pagès, master violinmaker in Mirecourt, the heart of French violinmaking, where he learned the craft of stringed instruments (violin, viola, cello). He then went to Charles Beare’s workshop in London to study high level restoration and expertise of ancient instruments. In 1983, he returned to Paris for fifteen years, during which he deepened his knowledge under the guidance of Etienne Vatelot, restoring and setting up instruments played by international soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Slava Rostropovich, Boris Belkin , Salvatore Accardo, Isaac Stern, Maxim Vengerov, Patrice Fontanarosa, Olivier Charlier and many more. In 1994, Jean-Jacques Rampal was appointed expert by the Cour d’appel de Paris (Paris Court) in the section dedicated to stringed instruments. He occupied the same function with the Orchester de Paris, Orchester National de Radio-France, Orchester Philharmonique de Radio-France, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, and with orchestras of Lille, Brittany, of Cannes -Provence, and Las Palmas (Canary Islands). In January 1998, Jean-Jacques Rampal succeeded Etienne Vatelot as the head of the workshop. Now recognized as an international expert, Rampal is called upon by numerous musicians and colleagues for his knowledge and authenticity certificates. To promote violinmaking, Jean-Jacques Rampal gives readings in many parts of the world (Europe, Canada, Korea, Japan). When Jean-Jacques Rampal comes to Vichy, which he has done for the last 15 years as an expert in international musical instrument auction sales, he returns to his family roots. Notably, it is here that his father, the famous flautist Jean-Pierre Rampal, started his career in 1946 as a solo flautist with the Vichy Orchestra.
