Jiwon Han

Jake (Jiwon) Han is the current Head Luthier of Los Angeles Violin Shop and is entrusted with the finest instruments that come through our doors. Already a well-established luthier, he joined LAVS in 2015 to further broaden his level of crafting and restoration. Jake’s acoustical adjustment and set-up skills have greatly aided musicians of all levels since his arrival. In addition to his work at LAVS, Jake currently crafts award-winning violins & violas by commission. These instruments are in demand by advanced and professional level players due to their incredibly nuanced sound and Jake’s fine workmanship.

Before relocating to the U.S, Jake lived and worked in Seoul, South Korea. He gained workshop and restoration experience at the Stradi Workshop. While affiliated with Stradi Workshop, he worked closely with the Kumho Asiana Foundation and Songwoo Trading Company. These companies are regular distributors of supplies to the leading international violin dealership, John & Arthur Beare. During one of Owen Lee’s ventures abroad, he petitioned Jake to become Head Luthier of LAVS and of which, he accepted.

KWANGYEON RYAN KIM

Ryan (Kwang-Yeon) Kim joined the Los Angeles Violin Shop in 2015. He is an extremely reliable craftsman; Ryan’s knowledge and understanding of instrument construction have become an asset to many customers and patrons. Currently, Ryan crafts his own competition-grade violins along with fine restoration and set-up work at LAVS. 

Ryan has won an award for his craftsmanship from the Violin Makers Association of Arizona International: 

2021 Silver Medal in Violin Tone 

Born and raised in Seoul, South Korea, Ryan has been fascinated with wood-working since childhood. He eventually moved to the United States where he met Owen Lee, still then an apprentice to Amos Hargrave. A friendship with Owen exposed Ryan to the world of violin lutherie, thus transforming his childhood interest into a vocation.  Ryan trained in craftsmanship and restoration under distinguished luthiers Amos Hargrave and Jake Han. He continually strives to expand his experience with antique instruments and their maintenance.

San-Ha Park

San-Ha Park came to the Los Angeles Violin Shop in 2018 as an accomplished guitar maker fascinated with the violin world. His diverse artistic background, woodworking knowledge, and effusive personality greatly contribute to the LAVS workshop environment. San’s understanding and internalization of the arts can be seen within his unique craftsmanship and overall finish of his instruments. He crafts acoustic and electric guitars by commission, and is working on producing competition-grade violins and violas. .

San has won multiple awards for his craftsmanship from Violin Makers Association of Arizona International: 

 

2021 Gold  Medal in Violin Tone for Gut String Violins

2021 Silver Medal in Overall Points for Gut String Violins 

2021 The Bob Wallace Award for Best in Violin Tone 

 

San attended the Musicians Institute in Hollywood where he studied Guitar Craft and Acoustic Guitar Design under Isaac Jang and Kathy Wingert. With these instructors, San sharpened his restoration, repairing, and instrument building skills. Before moving to CA in 2015, he earned his Associates Degree in Liberal Arts, at Montgomery CC in Blue Bell, PA. San also took fine art courses at the Tyler School of Arts, Moore College of Arts, and The Art Institute of Philadelphia. 

San’s mentor, Kathy Wingert, encouraged him to pursue violin lutherie after he completed his studies. In his search for a workshop, San was introduced to L.A. Violin Shop where he began learning from Head Luthier Jake Han. San now provides the patrons of L. A. Violin Shop with his expertise in guitar and violin restoration. Presently, San works in tandem with Jake Han at The Colburn School to provide their skills and knowledge directly to students.
